Do You Have To?

29 januari 2018

‘Do I really have to spend time on all this people stuff?’ sighed the exasperated CEO. No, of course not. The only thing we all have to do is breathe and pay taxes. But do you want to? Clearly this CEO was convinced that he didn’t want to spend his time ‘pampering’ (his words, not mine) his people.

But when we talked about where he wanted to be with his company in 5 years’ time, it became clear that to reach his ambitions, he needed other people, he needed a motivated and capable team, he needed people who wanted to invest themselves in the company.

He really wanted to make it work, he really wanted to build a great team, he just didn’t know how to – he just wasn’t confident that he would be able to make it work.

Starting from his fear, it looked like it would be easier not to have discussions with his people about their goals and ambitions, it would be easier not to train them, it would be easier to just focus on the product and the technology. But that wouldn’t get him and his company to the next level.

Fear is seldom a wise advisor. Fear can tell you what you still have to learn. It seldom tells you what (not) to do.

So what do you choose?

To focus on the stuff you know and like, and not reach your goals? To let the fear win? Or stretch yourself outside your comfort zone, so you can reach your targets together with your team?

This CEO chose the courageous path, he let others help him, and built a strong team. It’s a stretch, it’s uncomfortable, and there are days when he asks himself ‘do I really have to?’ But he knows that in the end he really wants to. Together they are on track to reach their goals.
